21: I Hope You Had The Time Of Your Life

When tempers had calmed down and the Stoned Crows and Green Circles had reluctantly shaken hands, Chas informed them that neither band would be rehearsing in Room 101 due to the cost; that was only for the "really" big stars he informed them, much to Effy's indignation.

Chas led us all into a conference room off from reception where there was a row of chairs lined out in front of a large projector screen. As we all trooped in there was still some ongoing cursing and argy-bargy between the Circles and the Crows. We were ushered into our seats by Chas who was pleading for quiet. A young, scruffy looking man appeared at Chas's side. He was short and fat and sported a long pony tail and equally long goatee. His demeanour could only be described as teenage sullen, although he must have been thirty, if he was a day.

'Okay boys, boys, and girl, or should I say Lady,' Chas began. A chorus of "oo's" went up and everyone turned to stare at Divina, who shuffled uncomfortably in her chair and appeared a trifle embarrassed—Chas continued.

'Right, this is going to take about an hour. I'm going to run through the tour schedule, the contracts, the rules and regulations. Please don't interrupt, you can ask as many questions as you like at the end. Now I am the promoter and tour manager and Jez,' he turned towards the sullen looking man, 'Jez is assistant Tour Manager and he's also my right hand man. When I'm not around, Jez is head honcho.' It didn't take long for the pompous Effy to pipe up.

'What experience has he had? I don't recognise him? I'd prefer to use my own crew.' Chas seemed impatient and took his glasses off as he rubbed his eyes. He took a handkerchief out of his pocket and began to clean his glasses with barely disguised annoyance.

'Jez, would you be so kind as to give us a quick rundown of your resume for the last ten years?' requested Chas impatiently. Jez shuffled forward and in a gruff northern accent he began;

'94, guitar roadie for the Stones world tour. '96 guitar roadie for Oasis, Black Sabbath and Fleetwood Mac. '97 and '98 Tour manager for Elvis Costello, Van Morrison, Joe Strummer, the Pogues and Lindisfarne. '99, Tour Manager Ocean Colour Scene, Oasis, Supernaturals, 2000 …' Chas interrupted,

'Thanks Jez, I think the point's been made.' Effy looked a little deflated but didn't know when to shut up.

'All I was saying was that I haven't seen him around the traps for the last ten years!'

'Well that's hardly surprising considering you've been playing bingo halls and pubs while Jez has been frequenting the biggest stadiums around the world,' declared Chas smugly.

'Well maybe we should take a vote on it, you know a sort of referendum.' Effy didn't get any further with his pointless whining—Chas exploded.

'Now listen here and listen good,' he screeched, 'let's get this straight,
